Walter Baker's One Bowl Brownies Recipe

One of the reasons I love recipes and cookbooks so much is that they are so much more than just instructions on how to create a dish. Very often they each have their own unique story and historical context. The following recipe for Walter Baker's One Bowl Brownies have been a favorite in my family for years, ever since my grandparents met while working at Walter Baker Chocolate in Dorchester's Lower Mills area.

Walter Baker's One Bowl Brownies

1/2 package (4 squares) Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate
3/4 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
1 cup walnuts

Melt butter and chocolate. Stir to combine well.
Mix in sugar, then eggs, and vanilla.
Stir in the flour until totally combined.
Add walnuts, or any desired chopped nut.

Prep a 9 x 13 dish by lining with aluminum foil, and spraying with cooking spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. The brownies are very fudge-y and may appear a little undercooked, don't worry! Let cool and enjoy! Best with some vanilla ice cream.

To make gluten-free substitute your favorite gluten-free flour mix, mine is Jule's Gluten-Free.

I love the chocolate squares! They each have "Le Belle Chocolatier" on them

Melt the butter and baking chocolate squares together.

Add sugar.

Slowly mix in the flour

Then add walnuts - a must.

Bake them in a pan lined with aluminum foil for easy clean-up.

I like mine thinner so I used a 9 x 13 pan.
SO good!

It was a snow day. Oh, hey Will!
